Matrices

The latest major development of the Caruso Method: techniques and exercises to train the elements common to all mountain activities, from walking to climbing. Movement is studied on the ground, outdoors, before taking it onto the wall or the trails.

What they are

The Movement Matrices

The Movement Matrices and the walking techniques are the latest major development of the Caruso Method: exercises and techniques designed to train the technical elements shared by all mountain activities, from walking to rock and ice climbing, up to ski mountaineering.

Precisely because they cut across disciplines, the Matrices are above all a very effective way to improve walking, and to do it with more awareness. But their effect goes beyond the single gesture: they work deeply on the motor “roots” and correct the wrong movement habits we have carried for years.

What we train

Different disciplines share the same aspects of movement. The Matrices identify them and make them trainable, for a more natural and harmonious movement.

The core concept

Double weight, two centres of gravity

Every efficient movement comes from a single principle: the body always has two centres of gravity in play, and knowing how to manage them is what separates a movement that burns energy from one that saves it. It is not an abstract theory: it is the practical starting point from which the Caruso Method builds everything else.

You start on the ground, without the extra variable of the wall: here it is easier to isolate a single component of the movement, understand it, and repeat it until it becomes natural. That way the technical gesture is ready when you need it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to climb?
No. The Matrices are open to anyone who does, or wants to do, outdoor activities: trekking, trail running, mountaineering, walking and sport in general. We study how the body moves.
What is the difference from a normal climbing course?
A normal course takes you straight onto the wall. Here the work starts on the ground, isolating the individual components of movement, and then transfers them to the rock or the trail on solid foundations.
Which course should I choose?
The Tuesday course in Florence is a regular outdoor appointment, in three lessons. The weekend course concentrates the work into one weekend, with the day and crag to be agreed together.
